2021 Ford Explorer

Ford Explorer 2021, the multi-talented SUV

When, in 2020, Ford decided to renew the Ford Explorer completely, the automaker didn't skimp on this SUV's capabilities. By offering five variations, each with its own qualities and personality, Ford has made the Explorer one of the most versatile and high-performance SUVs on the market.

Performance enthusiasts will find it all in the ST version with its 400 horsepower. The more fuel-efficient will turn to the hybrid version, while enthusiasts will opt for the proven Ecoboost powertrains. All this in an envelope offering unique style and a 7-passenger capacity that makes the Explorer indispensable as a family vehicle.

Engines for the needs

The entry-level Ford Explorer offers the 2.3-litre, 4-cylinder Ecoboost engine under the hood. Don't be fooled by appearances, as this engine still delivers 300 horsepower and 310 pounds/feet of torque. At the top of the scale, under the hood of the Platinum, comes a 3.0-litre V6 engine with two turbochargers, bringing total power to 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. In between sit the hybrid version, offering a mechanical combination of a 3.3-litre V6 engine and an electric motor for a total of 318 horsepower. Or the other version of the 3.0-litre V6, refined for performance, giving the ST a total of 400 horsepower and 415 pounds-feet of torque.

Do what you want to do

When you think of the Explorer, you think of versatility. Yes, its cabin can comfortably accommodate seven passengers, thanks in part to an easily accessible third row. But it's its work capabilities that also amaze. By combining all-wheel drive with the 10-speed automatic transmission and the right engine, the Ford Explorer 2021 can tow up to 2,540 kilos (5,600 pounds). To make things easier, trailer stabilization is standard on all versions. Using stability control, this system selectively brakes and adjusts engine power to maintain control of the trailer under all circumstances.

Techno and comfy

As with all Ford models, the Explorer 2021 displays the standard Sync system on all variants, with an optional large 12.3-inch touch-screen center display. It also features a B&O audio system that transforms the cockpit into a concert hall. The Explorer also adds safety technologies such as the Ford CoPilot 360, a set of onboard systems that includes driving aids such as lane tracking and blind-spot detection.
