Five electric models by 2028
Following negotiations with the Unifor auto workers union, Ford reached an agreement in 2020 that no less than five different models should be built at the Canadian plant by 2028. At the moment, no official announcement has been made on the subject, but already some people are having fun imagining all the scenarios. Moving Mach-E production? Not likely, considering the recent work at the Cuautitlán Izcalli complex where it is produced. A North American version of the electric Ford Explorer, soon available in Europe? It's a possibility, but it's more likely that we don't even know what vehicles will be built there!
While we don't know exactly what models will be produced at the Oakville electric vehicle complex, one thing is certain: Ford has committed to increasing its electric vehicle production capacity to 2 million units by the end of 2026. The plant's ambitious overhaul is part of a US$50 billion investment program in electric vehicles, demonstrating its dedication to a more sustainable future.
Pioneering electric vehicles in Canada
The Oakville plant upgrade is just one piece of the puzzle, but an important one. Retooling the plant, which is currently only suited for combustion-powered cars, will be a major undertaking, and it's the first time such a project has been done in North America. It will also be the first time an automaker will build its electric passenger vehicles on Canadian soil.
